Plant City sits in eastern Hillsborough County, out along the Interstate 4 run between Tampa and Lakeland. It is an incorporated city, and it runs its own building department. Past the city limits, Plant City turns into farm land fast. Strawberry fields and cattle pasture still cover much of the ground east of Brandon. The area earned the name Winter Strawberry Capital of the World, and growers still farm here. The Florida Strawberry Festival still fills the grounds every winter. Growth is moving east along the I-4 corridor, and Plant City is in its path. County planners have studied about 35,000 rural acres along that corridor for future growth. Warehouses and new homes are going up where fields used to be. That brings demolition and land clearing work to ground that was farmed for decades. Plant City has been a town since 1885, and the downtown historic district holds homes from the early 1900s. Out on the acreage, plenty of buildings have stood for decades. Old farm houses sag, and pole barns rot at the posts. Block garages and old mobile homes get left behind when the land changes hands. We handle demolition on all of it. Our excavators take the structure down, and our dump trucks haul the debris off the property. We can pull the slab and the footers too, if you want clean ground for building. Older houses need an asbestos survey before demolition starts, so that step comes first.
Rural demolition has its own problems. The driveway may be dirt, and the power line may run right past the barn. Water and power need to be shut off and disconnected before anything comes down. We line that up with the utility before the machines roll in. A small shed or garage often comes down the same day. A house with a slab and a long haul takes longer. On a lot next to an occupied home, we work slower and keep the dust down. Pool removal falls under the same demolition work. We haul the debris with our own dump trucks, and the site gets left clean.
New building in Plant City often starts on land that was pasture or grove. Land clearing comes first. We take out the brush and the stumps, and we grub the roots out with the excavator. Skid steers and a wheel loader move the material into piles. Then our dump trucks haul it off. After the lot is clear, we move to land grading. Grading sets the fall of the ground so water runs where it should. Small changes in grade decide where water sits after a storm.
Florida rain comes hard and fast, and rural lots hold water. We install drainage systems to move it. That can mean a french drain along a low side, or a swale cut across the lot. On bigger parcels, a retention pond takes the runoff. We dig ponds with the excavator and use the spoil as fill. For a house or a shop, we build the pad. Fill dirt gets delivered and spread, then compacted in lifts. We set stem walls and rebar, and we run trenches for drainage and utility lines. By the time the builder shows up, the pad is set and the ground is compacted.
